More Moths

Following on from my previous post experimenting with the Swallowtail Moth, I've been playing around with a different species. This time I chose the Elephant Hawk Moth (again this is what I got from google, so correct me if I'm wrong).

Starting off with a few more from the previous moth:

And continuing with newer experiments, I made a different kaleidoscope pattern using a different moth. By copying, reflecting and layering the same image repeatedly I created this pattern; and then played around with layering further and photo manipulation:

Using the pattern above and the black and white pattern from my previous post I combined the two, to  create these further variations:

Moth Fabric

I made this pattern using a scan of what I believe to be (thanks to google) a Swallowtail Moth, multiplying and layering it in photoshop.

I really liked the pattern created and wondered what it would look like as a print. So using layers in photoshop with an image from a recent test shoot I made this... weird, but I love it!

Drawing and Doodles

Alongside visiting exhibitions to re-ignite my creativity shown in the previous post I have been attempting to draw again. I haven't sat down and given myself the time to draw what I consider as 'properly' in about 3 years - excluding the odd doodle here and there! So I set myself the task of getting back into it and learning all that I have forgot over the years. I started off with a few pencil sketches from a bumble bee to a mouth, they're not great but it's a starting point and practise makes perfect...

Then after scanning the images onto my computer I played around with adding colour and depth using different methods:

Re-printed on paper then drawn over with fine liner and painted with water.

Re-printed on paper then drawn over with fine liner and painted with watercolour.

Colour added using Photoshop CS6.

Features placed together in Photoshop, printed and painted over using watercolour.

More Experiments.

Here is another example of my experiments for the day.

Experimenting...

Recently I came around to buying myself CS6 Creative Suite, after many, many and many more free trials I realised it was about time to purchase the real deal.

I have always wanted to experiment more with digital illustration and, with nothing to do for the day I spent a few hours doing so - playing around with digital illustration and photo manipulation on a few of my own images. Getting to grips with the software beyond my usual perimeters alongside learning how to adapt to my new Wacom tablet (the first I have ever used). Nothing to impressive here, but I'm sure with practise and by incorporating my own hand drawn illustrations I can begin to develop.

Final Outcome

From the images of petrol spills (seen in University Begins Again and More Petrol) which gave us inspiration in the form of vivid colour, high shine, reflection, metallic, gloss and the oils inability to merge with water - we came up with our final concept and styling. We were so excited to create our final editorial, and it was lovely to work in a group that got along so amazingly and were all so passionate and dedicated.

Inspired by a filmic photographic direction influenced by Blade Runner this is our final fashion spread. We aimed our concept and outcome for Interview magazine as we felt the magazines own photography reflected ours and would keep with the visual identity of our shoot. Interview is forward thinking and would be perfect to encapsulate our forward thinking styling. We also admired the clean and simple layout, which would show of the styling and photography without distraction.

Sweeney Todd

This piece of work was created alongside a good friend of mine who both feature (I'm the one on the left). The styling in this image was inspired by Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd. We took aspects of the clothes (black, red, white and stripes) and makeup (pale skin and red lips) and styled ourselves accordingly. The image was then styled simplistically, inspired by Topshops imagery where the model is against a plain background. I'm not a natural model and much prefer to be behind the camera, you can probably sense this in the photographs. These images aren't recent but it's nice to relive the memories.

Illustration

The original image was inspired by illustrator Laura Lane, I then manipulated this in photoshop to add the fabric.
